I live on the south coast of maui and my rent for a 2 bedroom 2bath is 1285 monthly. Save on gas by taking the bus which is a dollar out of the central city limits. one way that is. My family and I are trying to manage. I'm moving into an unfurnished garage that's been converted to a studio (with a bathroom, stove, refrigerator and everything) in a good neighborhood. I'm renting for $900/month. Theoretically, you should be paying about a 1/3 of your takehome pay or 1/4 of your gross income for rent. So if a studio that's attached to somebody else's house is what you call comfortable, 4 times $900 is $3600 a month. $3600 times 12 months is about $43,000. If you want a higher standard of living, you'll want to make more.
