We are planning a trip to Hawaii soon, we aren’t sure which island or beach to go to. We are a family with a toddler and really aren’t interested in going to a party area, we just want a family area that has resteraunts and family entertainment nearby. What is the best area for famalies who are visiting Hawaii, and which island would be best.

I think Waikiki would be a good location, as there are many child friendly things to do & see on Oahu. We have a decent zoo & aquarium, a children’s museum, & good beaches for little ones. Ala Moana & Magic Island are both near Waikiki & are very safe. There are several places where you can explore tide pools, which most children find fascinating. There are some in the Makapuu/Waimanalo area & others on the north shore. For older children, there are lots of other things, so I wouldn’t recommend the water park, but for toddlers, there are not quite so many age appropriate things to do. So for them, I would suggest the water park in Kapolei, which has an area set aside for the little ones.

Hope you have a wonderful vacation!

I’m 22, I go to school in Hawaii, and I have 2 friends who own their own business’. One has a successful auto detailing business from home, and the other cleans houses and condos and also does fairly well. They can do it on their time on their schedule, and make tons, which is exactly what I need as a student in Hawaii… I just need a little help figuring out what to do! Any ideas? would be appreciated! Mahalo! Thanks!

I have an idea for you. I have a friend that has her own business and does very well. You might want to take a look at the telecommunications industry and collaborate with and have your own business within that industry. You can partner up with a 15 year old company. The largest direct selling telecommunications service provider in the world. (don’t just limit yourself to Hawaii either! you can go world wide!) They’ve been featured in several magazines like USA Today, Success, Fortune etc. Inc 500 rated them the 22nd fastest growing company. Donald Trump has endorsed them, uses the products and is highly involved in this company. They market in services people use every day and pay for anyway. Things such as local and long distance telephone services, Internet services, digital and video phone services, VOIP, Satellite TV and all the major celluar phone providers like Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, Altell, Nextell. You help people save money on services that they are already using, or can offer them services that they don’t have. After helping someone on their existing services, or putting someone on a new service, every single month these people pay their bills, you make a percentage every single month, month after month. That’s just one way you make money in this business.
So there’s one idea for you.

I’m in a home business, and I really don’t know what is the better way to have my web page on the net, I’m looking for a good and sheap company to help me to do my goal. We sales travel incentives for make more sales, every body loves vacations and we sales vacations for just $6.95 e/a and we have many places to go like, Cancun, Bahamas, Hawaii, Miami Beach, etc, but I am tire to spend so many mony in advertisement that is way I’m looking to be on the net…

Who is giving you internet access now? If it’s a good company, they should be able to offer you a hosting package for your web site. Call them and ask. They can help you get your pages uploaded.

If you don’t have a service that can do that, try Host 4 Profit at:

http://www.host4profit.com/cgi-bin/home.cgi?80311

You can get a hosting package at a good price. You can also make money by promoting Host 4 Profit once you have your own hosting package with them. You make $10 for everyone who buys a package through the link you’ll put on your travel page. So if you sign up 3 people, your own hosting is paid for.

I was told only Native Hawaiians and decendents of Native Hawaiians are allowed to own land in Hawaii? This would seem to go against the US Constitution and would have gone to court by now and lost.

Anyone can own land here in Hawaii.

The only land that only native hawaiians can own are homestead lands that are a portion of what used to be the ceded lands. Homestead land is a very small portion of the total land area available for housing or agricultural uses.

Hope that answers your question…….

I know this will be a little long. But I will try and keep it short.

I am 27. I live in Los Angeles, Hollywood. I like it here, love it mostly. But for the past 3 years or so, I have been very unhappy with my life, so I am looking for a temporary change to get me into a new mentality (yes I have tried therapy and drugs, no help! lol).

Here is my situation:

I have a decent job right now, with plenty of growth opportunity, pay is just ok, not great, but they are taking advantage of me. I know I will keep growing there, but I hate the management and I think that is why I am unhappy there, plus the commute is 80 miles per day. And extremely high stress. I want to work for myself again, but the ideas have been a bit slow lately. The ideas I have partialy pursued, my good research skills prove it to be a bad move, thankfully before I invest. But it doesn’t take away the let down feeling.

I live in Hollywood, love my roommates, pay 1000 per month, not bad.

I don’t have friends I hang out with daily. I am pretty much a loner (by choice, I want to break it). I always choose to be by myself, one of the reasons I want to try Hawaii, make new friends, relearn what it is like to enjoy peoples company. Pretty much been in a funk since my ex broke my heart 2 years ago. I don’t want her back, but cant move on. Change of scenery will help.

The main reason for not leaving, my family. I will miss them terribly. My mom, dad and brother.

So here is my thinking, please tell me if I am nuts.

1. I don’t have a girlfriend, wife, kids or financial responsibilities. I just made my last car payment.

2. The economy sucks, so if I am just waiting it out, why not wait it out there?

3. I will miss my family, but we can video chat everyday.

4. I can make new friends out there, change my lifestyle and routine, maybe become less of a loner.

5. I love Hawaii. It is the only place I have ever felt relaxed. (Ocean front only).

6. I have a crush on a girl at Sensei (she has no idea I exist, but for past 2 vacations I have seen her, and never got the opportunity to talk to her. Stupid story, and reason, but added to the list anyway!

7. I think this would be a life experience worth pursing. Could change my life. I want to learn to surf, play the guitar, and work on my health. I could get a low stress night job, or a phone sales job early in the morning (I was always really good at b2b phone sales, I manage 3 data companies now and we are very successful due to my teachings and management) this would give me the ability to enjoy my day and night. Currently, I work 10 hours, commute 3 hours, and feel like a drown when I get home and close the door by myself.

The reasons not to go?

1. I have a job that could get me higher and higher if I am willing to stick with shady and evil bosses trying to mold me to be like them.

2. I will miss my family.

3. I will be putting my career on hold, having a low paying job and eating into savings.

4. I will have to sell my furniture and maybe car. But I can always buy new stuff.

Ok…. If anyone read this and replies, thank you for taking the time.

If you do think I should try it, should I go to Maui or Oahu?

Maui – more relaxing, Less expensive, and I have a friend who lives on the island (plus I have a crush on that girl).

Oahu – more like LA, More expensive, but better chance in getting a job similar to my current pay.

I am looking at ocean front rooms with roommates on craigslist, so far, cheaper than living in LA, go figure.

Please hurry, I am eating away at my brain.

Oh, and if it makes a difference, my birthday is Feb 20, Cusp of Pisces

THANK YOU EVERYONE! Sorry for spelling errors, don’t have spell check on this computer.

I had a relative that moved to Maui. A doctor who had been sought out by a hospital there, so had a good job going in.

He had heard of Island Fever, but never thought it could get him. It did.

He found that phones and internet connections did not compare to hugs and sitting across the room from family for idle late night chat.

He was discouraged by the quality of some medical industry that he observed, but as the outsider had no voice to create improvement.

He heard lots of stories of people who went over expecting to find work and running out of money and having to call home for a return ticket!

Better have your friend check out job availability in your field for you before you move there! Many Hawaiians are working 2 jobs to keep up with their needs!

Why don’t you consider something like Santa Barbara? It has the beaches. It is more laid back than Hollywood/LA. There is more work available. If you want a change of scene you can drive to the desert, the mountains, or the culture of LA area.

With all the students at the University of California, you could likely find friends there! Take a couple of classes to meet some of them. Take classes based on your interests so you meet others interested in the same thing!

Think long and hard before moving to a small island so far from your roots.

We are married, my husband is in the USMC, and we are moving from N. Carolina to Hawaii during the first week of January. We are both in our early to mid-twenties, no kids, and I am a teacher. I’ve heard lots of mixed stories but could use some advice – this is our first PCS so advice on PCS’ing, Hawaii (housing, inexpensive things to do, etc.) would be helpful. Should we live on base, off base, find a realtor to help find a rental, etc.? Should we buy a car before or after (I’m selling my GTO beforehand)? Thanks!!! :)

The military will ship one vehicle to Hawaii for you. But you will be responsible for getting it to the closest port to North Carolina so you will have to drive there. They will give you MALT and Per Diem for doing it. The choice is really yours, if you own a vehicle and want to keep it then do it. If it isn’t financed there is no problems at all. If it is financed you will need a letter from the bank allowing you to take it to Hawaii. If you do buy a vehicle there, depends on what you want. If you want used, then try the lemon lots on base. There is Kbay, Hickam (is the nicer one), Schofield to go to. If you want to buy new, then look at Windward dealers where Kbay is. They do have decent prices usually. Make sure if you can you finance it before you go to the dealership. Set an amount that includes taxes, title and tags and don’t go above it. You are the one paying for it not them. For a loan try Navy Federal they do have offices on both sides of the island.

Go with an open mind, good attitude and be respectful. Never had a problem when we were stationed there twice and that was with friends who were locals and military.

Housing at Kbay is nice they are rebuilding it. There is 802 housing if it is still available, they have set amounts for BAH and anything about that in that housing only you pocket. It isn’t the greatest housing though but close to everything. The other housing was definitely better than what was there before and newer.

If you want to live off base go to the housing office first and foremost. They can have rentals through there that are decent for you. You can live in the Windward area or choose to be closer to Pearl Harbor/Hickam area. It is about a 30 minute drive with little traffic if you do. They do have housing over there as well. Plus lots of apartments to choose from. Just make sure that if you do rent you are paying at least $400 less than what your BAH is to pay for utilities. Because running the A/C all the time can start getting high on electricity.

There is lots to do in the area, make sure though you don’t do it all within the first few months then you can be bored afterwards. There is lots of places to swim at if that is what you like, hiking is great, great cheap food places to eat at as well, movie theaters are nice. Have passports because you can always go to Australia or Japan or other places within 8 hours.

ETA: Schools by the military bases are better than some of the local schools yes. But our kids have gone to schools in California, Florida, Hawaii and overseas and Hawaii schools were no different. There is always going to be bad schools in the area no matter where you are.

Eating out isn’t expensive if you know where to go. We ate out all the time for under $30 as a family of FOUR! You go to the small ma & pa restaurants as they have good, decent food for cheap.

The COLA more than makes up for the price differences in things. You just have to know where to shop. Use the commissaries as you have 4 to choose from. Shop at small local places, use your Safeway/Vons reduce price card, Foodland as well.

You will get up to 60 days of lodging paid for. But if you refuse a house then you have 10 days to find a place. The TLA more than covers the cost of lodging and food. There is the DLA which does help to cover the cost of a rental car. Rent on base at PH or Hickam if you can they are usually cheaper than out in town.

Anyone at Seattle or Oregon State including realtors knows if there’s any home values between 250-300K for at least 2500 sq. 3 bed. 2 bath, not that far away from town where most jobs are with good public schools for kids till High school? I heard this is impossible now and the homes go up to the millions for my criteria, that’s almost close to the home value as here in Hawaii where I live now. Thanks for your input.

Just using:

http://www.realestate.com/axx/applications/cob/asp/NSMetroSearch.asp?metro=ORPortland&ESOURCEID=769790&ef_id=1042:3:1020200320_portland%20mls_s:rU1oCUNIYX4AAD5MBgIAAAAK:20071118104140&800num=1-866-903-5196&sem=021&city=Portland&state=OR&propTypes=4,%203,%202&promo=00101&gclid=COSVkeqa5o8CFRwzYQod6BgQiA

came up with dozens of houses in the Portland area. You will have to do a separate search for the ratings of the school districts, but Oregon is definitely cheaper than Hawaii. Seattle will be more expensive. Another possibility is Vancouver, Washington, just over the river from Portland.

Your best bet in finding a new place to live is to go there and visit for a week and check out the neighborhoods (and jobs) iin person.

Good luck!

This week Avi Lewis visits the people behind the native movement for self-determination in Hawaii. Well over 200 years old the movement has recently been gaining on strength.
